The idea for Nickolai of the North came from a conversation between the author, local writer Lucy Daniel Raby, and daughter ten years ago, when Isabel asked, ‘Who filled Santa’s stocking when he was a boy?’

This triggered more question about the early years of Young Santa, and much background research, plotting and planning around this pre-existing myth.

After several years developing the idea as a film script entitled Young Santa, with
CITV, then the UK Film Council,

Lucy turned her story into a book. Nickolai of the North is about why Santa carries out his mission every year - how he lost his magical elfin kingdom under the ice at the North Pole, met the reindeer, went in search of his identity and eventually saved the world’s children from the evil Queen Magda.

The sequel,
Nickolai’s Quest, follows Nickolai as he carries out his first Christmas mission against all odds.

This year (2009), after a serendipitous meeting with theatre director
Ian Stephens, Lucy turned her Christmas tale into a stage play with songs.

This micro-site presents the
scores and recordings of the songs as they were on the 2nd January in the Marine Theatre, Lyme Regis, used here by kind permission of Ian Stephens, director, and the full cast and musicians.
